Leezen is the largest organic retail chain in Taiwan with 97 stores and 11 overseas locations. Leezen’s philosophy of organic lifestyle came into fruition with the collaboration of 915 farmers at 230 farms, 380 vendors, thousands of employees, and 6 million devoted consumers. Leezen supplies more than 2,000 items, ranging from organic fruits and vegetables, food products, clothing made from organic cotton, selective household items, to audio books and supplies related to Buddhism. The company continues to develop new products adding over 100 items to its portfolio of organic food and goods each year.
Leezen’s infrastructure consists of five ESXi hosts. “Our environment is a mix of Windows and Linux, with approximately 70-80 VMware VMs. Critical applications and data must be recovered instantly, including Microsoft SQL, Oracle DB, Oracle JDE, ordering system, and product audit system,” says Jason Wan, Information Technology Technical Manager at Leezen.
With over 100 stores in Taiwan, USA, Canada, Singapore, China, and Hong Kong, Leezen must maintain 24/7 access to their applications and data. “We have established a large interconnected network of resellers, vendors, and customers who depend on our timely day-to-day operations. If there is a problem with our IT infrastructure, this would affect business continuity tremendously. That is why we must be able to restore our environment as quickly as possible,” says Jason.
Previously, Leezen had a physical environment and protected it by installing agents on each protected machine and copying data to external hard drives. “Our approach was too old-fashioned, that is why we finally decided to virtualize our environment. We prepared a physical server in our datacenter and installed VMware vSphere. Next, we decided to find a backup solution that would give us a sense of stability and protection. We did not need a bunch of features. We needed a cost-effective and easy to use product that could quickly back up and instantly restore our VMware VMs,” says Jason.
Leezen selected NAKIVO Backup & Replication to protect their VMware environment. “NAKIVO Backup & Replication installed effortlessly on Windows. The web interface is excellent and I could use a macOS to manage the software. It is an extremely easy to use solution that does not require installing any expensive agents,” says Jason.
Leezen’s main goal of purchasing a backup solution was to perform daily VM backups and be able to instantly recover full VMs. “One advantage of NAKIVO Backup & Replication is that the software supports backup of MS SQL and Oracle,” says Jason. NAKIVO Backup & Replication uses VMware quiescing technology to create application-consistent VMware VM backups. “With automated backup verification, we know that our VM backups completed successfully and are recoverable,” says Jason. NAKIVO Backup & Replication can automatically check VM backups to ensure that entire VMs, files, and objects can be recovered.
With the previous approach to data protection, Leezen usually wasted the whole day on trying to recover data. “Previously, we had to install an OS and all patches and only then could we recover applications and data. This whole process usually took the whole day. Nowadays, with NAKIVO Backup & Replication, the entire system can be recovered in less than 10 minutes with just one click of a button. Flash VM Boot is a great technology and gives peace of mind when some system failures arise. With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, our network of resellers, vendors, and customers operates successfully without any interruptions,” says Jason.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides reliable, easy to use, and flexible VM backup and recovery features to support Leezen’s business. When Leezen deployed NAKIVO Backup & Replication, VM recovery speed improved dramatically. With Flash VM Boot, Leezen can recover full VMs in under 10 minutes. “With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, it is extremely easy to restore our environment with minimum resources and little effort involved. NAKIVO Backup & Replication helped us save management time by approximately 60% and achieve system wide data protection and fast data recovery,” says Jason.
Leezen opened its first organic store in 1998 with the intent to restore harmony between mankind and nature, when organic farming was consistently dismissed by critiques for being unpractical. Leezen, being mindful of organic farmers’ hardships and need for assistance, procured all organic produce farmers were capable of growing and harvesting. Nowadays, Leezen has expanded to become the largest organic retail chain in Taiwan with 97 stores and 11 overseas locations in the United States, Canada, Singapore, Malaysia, Shanghai, and Hong Kong. By 2013, Leezen has grown to $70 million in revenue as it aspires to “rejuvenate the mother earth and purify the mind”. Leezen provides transparency in organic labeling according to the grade of materials used, promotes the use of materials that are eco-friendly, promotes the use of organic cotton, and assures the quality of raw materials, manufacturing process, and final products. The company operates and adheres to the principle of win-win and integrity, and has successfully earned the trust of farmers, vendors, and consumers alike. A few years ago – when corps. was a much smaller company – availability of IT systems and data protection was a minor factor for corps. “We could afford to wait for a few hours or even for a day for something to be restored,” says Simon Flohr, Project Manager and Head of IT at corps. “This has changed recently as we continue to grow the company. In the past, we mainly published quarterly magazines. But now we have many monthly and even weekly publications, so with this short time to make an issue we just cannot afford to have any significant downtime.”
Providing business availability and data protection became one of the top business priorities. As a first step in the process of improved availability and data protection, the company moved its IT infrastructure from physical servers to VMware vSphere.
“We now have a standard set of applications such as Microsoft Exchange and Active Directory, file and print servers, and so on that run on VMware,” says Simon. “Additionally we also have some specialized applications on VMware for our publishing needs, like VMs for our management system, which we use to issue our publications. Finally, our most important VMs are our customer databases where we store our customers’ data with addresses and so on.”
After the migration was complete, corps. began looking for a native VMware backup solution. Their new IT services and support partner – Hanno Kirchhoff EDV-Beratung GmbH – recommended NAKIVO Backup & Replication, and corps. began evaluating the solution.
“Since the time NAKIVO Backup & Replication was installed and configured by our IT services partner, it has been transparent, extremely available, and I can easily use it even though I’m not a professional VMware administrator,” says Simon.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is VMware-certified, purely agentless, and features a simple and intuitive Web interface. The product provides image-based backup and replication of entire VMs, supports live applications and databases, and enables instant recovery of VMs, files, and application objects directly from compressed and deduplicated VM backups. The product also speeds up data transfer with network acceleration and reduces data size with global deduplication and compression.
Simon appreciates the email reporting feature of NAKIVO Backup & Replication. “The product is running backup jobs every day, so I really want to know what was done and if all the jobs finished successfully,” says Simon. “That’s what I really like about NAKIVO Backup & Replication – it sends me daily reports over email with all the information that I need, so I can monitor the state of VM backup.”
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is used to protect VMware infrastructure at corps. “NAKIVO Backup & Replication has worked perfectly for us thus far and we plan to use it for the years to come,” says Simon. “I’m now confident that if our systems fail, NAKIVO Backup & Replication will restore them quickly and effortlessly, saving us a lot of money and time. This gives me a piece of mind.”

Armstrong Labs runs their multi-tenant cloud backup infrastructure within data centers located in Perth, Western Australia. The company protects data of organizations in the health and engineering industries, and is looking to expand their offering to cater to other industry types through 2015-2016. Armstrong Labs’ customers run a variety of workloads including email messaging, file servers, various Line-Of-Business applications, and deployments of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.
Most of the Armstrong Labs’ customers have previously backed up the very minimum required information to tape, portable disk, or an onsite NAS with nothing stored offsite. This approach didn’t protect entire VMs and was unreliable since most customers have never fully tested a restore scenario.
Armstrong Labs’ goal was to provide a managed VMware backup solution for their clients with scheduled full restore testing at the company’s data center.
“Our customers require comprehensive backup solutions to mitigate hardware failures and tolerate extended downtime,” says Andrew Armstrong, Owner of Armstrong Labs. “One of our current customers had a major hardware failure and no usable backup resulting in extended downtime (3 days) prior to being managed by Armstrong Labs. This was very costly and embarrassing to their business.”
“We have evaluated several products and found that NAKIVO Backup & Replication simply has the right mix of features, pricing, and usability for both us and our clients, says Andrew. “Support was also very responsive when we reported a small issue during setup, we were very happy about the assistance provided.”
NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides a rich feature set, including forever incremental VM backup and replication, support for applications and databases, global data deduplication, network acceleration, instant VM, file, and application objects recovery. Most importantly, the product provides multi-tenancy and self-service options out of the box, enabling cloud providers to introduce BaaS and DRaaS.
“NAKIVO slots in very nicely to our portfolio of services; as a managed backup services provider, it delivers an efficient and comprehensive backup solution at a price point that puts advanced features within easy reach of the SMB market segment,” says Andrew. “NAKIVO is equally suitable for very large deployments, which provides us with a plenty of growth capability in future without having to change products at a later date.”
Using NAKIVO Backup & Replication, Armstrong Labs now provides a comprehensive DRaaS solution for their clients with scheduled full restore testing at their Perth data center. Recently, one of Armstrong Labs customers was infected with a variant of the Crypto-Locker virus, which did extensive damage to the customer data, and Armstrong Labs had them fully operational again within 2 hours.
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, Armstrong Labs is able to provide advanced data protection and business continuity features, which are not normally available to the SMB market segment, while customers can have a peace of mind that NAKIVO and Armstrong Labs are providing them a reliable and regularly tested recovery solution.

Soilmoisture is using VMware’s hypervisor to run business-critical workloads. The company has virtualized their tier one applications and databases including Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, domain controller, data servers, and QAD MFG/PRO for sales, accounting, inventory and shop floor control.
For a few years, Soilmoisture has used a VM data protection product to protect their VMware infrastructure: business-critical VMs were backed up daily and backup copies were sent offsite for secure storage. As the company’s infrastructure has grown, so did the need for VM data protection. “However, the other vendor could not resolve a very simple reseller’s mistake, where a 1-socket license was bought instead of a 2-socket license for our new ESXi server. To make things worse, after spending money on additional licenses and maintenance, we were then told we have NO valid licenses,” said Robert Elliott, Computer Services Manager at Soilmoisture.
“So we went shopping and studied all VM backup solutions available on the market,” said Robert. “What we found is that NAKIVO Backup & Replication is not only equivalent to our current VM backup, but it is easier to use and much more affordable to buy and maintain,” he added.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is VMware-certified, purely agentless, and can be deployed on both Linux and Windows. Featuring a simple and intuitive Web UI, the product can back up and replicate VMware VMs onsite, offsite, and to private/public. NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports live applications and databases, instantly recovers VMs, files, and application objects directly from compressed and deduplicated VM backups, speeds up data transfer with network acceleration, and reduces data size with global deduplication and compression.
Soilmoisture now uses NAKIVO Backup & Replication to protect their business-critical VMs. After deploying the product, the company has successfully performed file and VM recoveries. “NAKIVO Backup & Replication enables us to reliably protect our VMware infrastructure at a price point that is at least 2X lower than competitive products,” said Robert.

RvO has a strong history of deploying and supporting VMware vSphere for their customers. RvO required a Linux based backup solution that could easily backup VMware VMs from their customer sites to the RvO cloud. The VM backup solution needed to enable customers to schedule backups, create and edit backup jobs, view backup jobs underway, monitor results, and initiate backup restores.
“In the past, we worked with another VM backup solution, but it required us to spend about 30 hours per month to manage and maintain the system and did not support vCloud Director,” said Primoz Lah, CTO at RvO. “We evaluated the other leading third-party VMware backup solution on the market, and selected NAKIVO Backup & Replication due to its low maintenance, high reliability, performance and superior customer usability.”
Performance and Scalability
RvO is a rapidly growing business, and while several hundred VMs are protected by NAKIVO today, RvO expects to protect thousands of VMs across more geographically distributed sites in the near future. Multiple customer environments are hosted within the RvO hosting center, however, RvO often faced VM backup performance challenges with sites located outside of the hosting facility in places with slow WAN links. As a result, RvO required high-performance network acceleration and a network distributed architecture for scalability built into their next VM backup solution.
Primoz’s team was in search of a new solution, and tested many products that offered an intuitive, scalable, powerful and reliable data protection solution. “After testing several VM data protection products side by side, we realized that NAKIVO Backup & Replication, along with their highly responsive support team, was the best VM backup solution for our Backup as a Service offering,” said Primoz.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is specifically built for VMware environments, supports live applications and databases, features near-continuous data protection, changed block tracking, file recovery, compression, and multi-threaded VM processing. By unifying VM backup and replication in a single solution, NAKIVO can deliver fast and reliable VM backup, replication, and recovery.
Since implementing NAKIVO Backup & Replication, RvO has dramatically improved VM backup performance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction while reducing system maintenance time and labor dramatically.
“With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, our customers can almost learn the user interface themselves; reducing our training time from hours to minutes. An initial backup job on 30GB VM can be complete in just five minutes by us and/or the customer. It just works and it works fast!” said Primoz.
Reliable VM backup and recovery is a must, and minimizing the management time to obtain high service levels is even more important. “With advanced VM Backup functionality, superior usability and impressive performance, NAKIVO Backup & Replication has also reduced our overall virtualization data protection costs by 40%” added Primoz.
RvO delivers cloud services to hundreds of customers across Europe. Intense customer support has made RvO, a leader in cloud computing. In 2011, Bradburys decided to look at how they could reduce the cost of IT within their business without sacrificing any reliability. After a comprehensive study, the company decided to turn to VMware. Now Bradburys has two ESXi 5.1 hosts in production at their main site, each running on HP DL380 with twin-quad core processors and 64 GB of RAM, connected through fiber channel to an HP MSA with 16 TBs of RAID storage. The hardware powers 36 VMs: 19 Windows and Linux servers and 17 virtual desktops, and serves 149 users across three sites in Buxton Derbyshire and one site in Nottinghamshire. The company has virtualized all their critical servers including Oracle database, Microsoft Exchange 2010, SQL and Red Hat Enterprise servers. “After the project was complete we realized that whilst we were backing up using our legacy solution we did not have any software in place that would replicate the critical production servers across to our DR site,” said Greg Buccheri, IT Manager at Bradburys. “As our systems are quite diverse, it became apparent that any disaster would mean at least 12 hours of downtime.” This was not acceptable and a solution had to be found quickly. “We knew that whatever software we used needed to be application aware as our systems include both Microsoft and Oracle databases,” added Greg. “Also we have Exchange 2010 and Red Hat Enterprise in the enterprise, so these all had to be covered as well.”
“We looked at and tried many different solutions searching for one that would not only cover our needs but that would also give us a good ROI,” said Greg. The IT team at Bradburys soon came across NAKIVO Backup & Replication and wondered if the product would provide the type of protection they needed.
“We were very surprised at how easy it was to both set-up and use the product, the GUI is intuitive and laid out in a proficient and logical way,” added Greg. “And we were all delighted that NAKIVO Backup & Replication achieved our disaster recovery goals and cut our recovery time from hours to minutes. This, coupled with the software’s ability to perform VM backups and restores to an earlier point in time makes this product a winner.”
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is built specifically for VMware vSphere environments by unifying VM backup and replication in a single solution to provide fast, reliable, and efficient recovery of VMs including applications and data.
“We evaluated other leading VM backup and disaster recovery solutions but selected NAKIVO Backup & Replication for its ability to deliver a 2X to 8X greater ROI versus other available offerings. The unique combination of price, performance, and time-saving functionality made NAKIVO Backup & Replication the clear winner for protecting our business-critical applications and services,” added Greg.
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, Bradburys has reduced projected disaster downtime from 12 hours to just 10 minutes. Bradburys now also utilizes NAKIVO Backup & Replication as their single solution for backing up, replicating, and protecting their virtualized infrastructure. Bradburys has reduced their recovery time objective (RTO) by 99% while also reaching a new lower recovery point objective (RPO) of just one minute to better support their business critical VMware environment of Microsoft and Oracle applications.

The IT infrastructure at The Santa Fe New Mexican is almost 100% virtualized, and runs on five ESXi servers. The VMs store everything from images, videos, spreadsheets, and documents to SQL databases, file / mail / advertising / accounting / finance servers, as well as the IP phone system Shore Tel. Consequently, as the company grows and develops the amount of data they need to manage increases as well.
The Santa Fe New Mexican needs to back up 25 VMs that contain the most critical business data. “We have previously performed a disk-to-disk backup of physical servers using our legacy data protection solution,” said Michael Campbell, IT Director of The Santa Fe New Mexican. “Because of that, we were very dependent on rebuilding a new physical server from scratch and then performing a restore of the data.”
Michael has decided to switch from their legacy solution to a modern, virtualization-native product to improve their DR strategy. Fast recovery from a local, image-based backup was the number one priority, however Michael decided to take a step further. “As any other business, we’d like to protect ourselves from the threat of losing all our data as a result of a disaster or theft,” he said. “To achieve that, we were looking for a solution that is capable of backing up to a public cloud. This would provide a virtually risk-free method for protecting our business data.”
“I spotted NAKIVO Backup & Replication in an analyst review by Storage Switzerland,” said Michael. “On paper, it looked as if the product would be an ideal solution and so we contacted the company with a view to evaluate the software.” Michael was sold on NAKIVO’s support for direct backup to cloud – an easy-to-use, cost-effective, and secure public cloud storage. “NAKIVO Backup & Replication offered the opportunity to save our data both locally for fast operational recovery, and offsite for reliable disaster recovery, in one of the most affordable public clouds,” said Michael.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication exceeded Michael’s expectations with a modern, Web 2.0 UI and zero learning curve that immediately set the product apart from other solutions. Michael also greatly appreciated NAKIVO’s support of live Exchange, Active Directory, MS SQL, Oracle, and other applications, changed block tracking, multi-threaded VM processing, deduplication, encryption, and compression. “NAKIVO Backup & Replication has a next-generation feature set that enables us to back up VMs locally 40% faster and back up VMs to cloud for 80% less than sending tapes offsite.”
With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, The Santa Fe New Mexican has protected their entire virtual infrastructure, reduced RTO down to 10 minutes, and backed up the most critical VMs to cloud. “Should we experience a host failure or lose data by any means, we are safe in knowing NAKIVO is able to restore our VM’s in a quick and safe fashion, whether it’s from our storage or from cloud,” said Michael. “We are now able to continue expanding and growing our business knowing that our information is reliably backed up and can be easily restored in case of a disaster.”
Established over 160 years ago, The Santa Fe New Mexican is the West’s oldest newspaper company. With a paid print circulation of 27,000 copies, more than 300,000 unique visitors to its website, and 6,000 advertisers each month. The New Mexican’s commercial printing operation issues more than 25 publications, including the daily New York Times for the state of New Mexico. Having a strong local focus, The Santa Fe New Mexican delivers a valuable service to the community by keeping its residents informed of the current issues that affect their lives. Branch Manufacturing moved to virtualization in 2006. The company’s infrastructure is now fully virtualized and runs VMs with SQL, Exchange, AD, ERP and a CRM. Being committed to superior customer service, Branch Manufacturing depends on access to these mission-critical VMs to ensure the rapid delivery of high quality dies and finished components to its customers.
Virtualization data protection software at Branch Manufacturing was far from being perfect. The company has adopted a first generation VM backup tool, which could not deliver the reliability and simplicity that the business required. “With our old solution, VM backups have often failed and required manual intervention to complete successfully,” said Dan Long, MIS Director at Branch Manufacturing.
The company needed a more reliable solution that could reduce IT administration time. Dan began looking for a replacement to their legacy VM backup solution that would meet the company’s specific requirements.
In search for a simple and reliable data protection solution, Dan has referred to Nexus – a leading IT solution and services provider in Minnesota – who advised trying NAKIVO Backup & Replication. “After testing several VM data protection products side by side, we realized that NAKIVO Backup & Replication along with their highly responsive and helpful support team was the best VM backup solution for our needs,” he said.
NAKIVO Backup & Replication is built specifically for VMware environments, supports live applications and databases, features near-continuous data protection, changed block tracking, compression, and multi-threaded VM processing. By unifying VM backup and replication in a single solution, NAKIVO can deliver fast and reliable VM backup, replication, and recovery.
Since implementing NAKIVO Backup & Replication, Branch Manufacturing has dramatically improved VM backup efficiency. “With NAKIVO Backup & Replication, my backup jobs are always successful. It just works!” said Dan.
Reliable VM backup and recovery is a must, and minimizing the management time to obtain reliable business continuity is even more important. “With advanced VM Backup functionality and impressive performance, NAKIVO Backup & Replication has reduced our overall virtualization data protection costs by 60%,” added Dan.

UPM protects dozens of VMs running Java applications as well as Oracle and SQL databases. “Our existing backup and replication product is a pain,” said Alonso Satomayor, CEO at UPM. “First, it has a very cumbersome configuration because you need to install a VA in each ESXi host that you want to back up or replicate. Second, making a backup of even a single machine, utilizes a significant amount of server resources. Moreover, the product allows us to replicate only 3 VMs at the same time.”
With the new release of vSphere, the existing product could not even run backup and replication, so its upgrade seemed inevitable. However, Alonso found that this might not be the best option. “With the current economic situation, price is very important to us and our SMB customers,” he said. “The upgrade to the new version of our existing product is very expensive.”
Since the upgrade of the existing product did not promise to solve all the issues and had a high price tag, Alonso decided to investigate all possible options. “We have evaluated the leading data protection offerings available on the market,” he said. “From the price to value perspective, NAKIVO Backup & Replication beat every other product we have tried, and we have tried all the leaders.”
NAKIVO Backup & Replication has delivered on UPM requirements. The product supports backing up and replicating VMs running live applications and databases, does not require installing VAs on protected servers, can process multiple VMs at the same time due to its multi-threaded architecture, and supports the latest version of vSphere.
“What was also critical for us is the ability to replicate to the same vCenter and even the same ESXi host,” said Alonso. “We also liked the modern, web 2.0 interface that is by far the most informative and intuitive we have seen. This is important both to us and our customers who cannot spend time and resources on learning complex software.” On top of that, UPM has gained the ability to extend their offering with backup to public clouds.
UPM has saved 50% of their data protection budget with NAKIVO Backup & Replication, and can now offer more competitive prices to their SMB customers as well as enjoy higher margins. Backup and replication speed has increased by 30%, and with deduplication – that has not even been an option previously – UPM has dramatically reduced space utilization. Time needed for data protection configuration and management has decreased tenfold.
Since 1996, UPM provides infrastructure administration services as well as web, virtual server, and email hosting for SMB clients in Santiago, Chile. UPM helps over 200 customers create and maintain their IT environments letting companies concentrate on business rather than on troubleshooting IT issues. As a service provider, UPM offers exceptional personalized services including virtual infrastructure backup and replication to remote destinations. For more information, visit www.upmchile.com.
