Step-by-Step Guide to Integrating NAKIVO with Impossible Cloud

As businesses look for innovative ways to secure and manage their backups, cloud-based solutions are emerging as a powerful alternative to traditional storage. NAKIVO backup with Impossible Cloud takes this further by combining advanced backup capabilities with a decentralized, secure cloud infrastructure.

This integration empowers businesses to streamline disaster recovery, reduce costs and ensure reliable access to their critical data. Read this blog post to learn how to integrate NAKIVO Backup & Replication with Impossible Cloud.

Back Up Directly to Cloud

Back Up Directly to Cloud

Avoid a single point of failure with NAKIVO by backing up virtual, cloud and physical workloads directly to the most popular clouds and other S3-compatible platforms.

Why Choose Impossible Cloud for NAKIVO Backup Storage

Impossible Cloud is an Amazon S3-compatible storage solution accessed via AWS S3 APIs, enabling seamless use with third-party software. NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports S3-compatible storage, which means it can integrate directly with Impossible Cloud for reliable backups.

Compliance readiness. Organizations in specific industries and in the European Union must meet the GDPR compliance requirements. They have to keep their data (including the data of their users) on servers that are geographically located in the EU. Impossible Cloud offers multiple European datacenter options for data storage, and its integration with NAKIVO is fully GDPR-compliant.

Security and ransomware protection. Impossible Cloud supports Versioning and Object Lock. NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports backup immutability in an S3-compatible storage platform. As a result, you can store immutable backups in the cloud, which is a reliable strategy for ransomware protection. Immutable data cannot be deleted or modified by third parties or ransomware. You can also implement strict encryption standards in transit and at rest.

Suitable for diverse organizations. NAKIVO Backup & Replication supports single-tenant and multi-tenant architectures. As a result, individual users and Managed Service Providers (MSPs) can use the solution.

Cost-effective data protection. Impossible Cloud provides storage using a pay-as-you-go model and NAKIVO Backup & Replication has a flexible pricing model suitable for individual customers and MSPs.

Pre-Integration Requirements

Complete the following requirements before configuring NAKIVO backup with Impossible Cloud:

  • Get an account and a valid subscription in Impossible Cloud with access to S3-compatible storage.
  • Get a valid NAKIVO Backup & Replication license that allows backup to S3-compatible storage. See pricing and editions for more details.
  • NAKIVO Backup & Replication components must have internet access to the storage servers of Impossible Cloud.

Step-by-Step Integration Guide

Let’s explain how to integrate NAKIVO with Impossible Cloud. The main stages are creating a bucket, creating access keys, adding Impossible Cloud to the NAKIVO inventory and creating a backup repository in the bucket.

Step 1 – Create a Bucket in Impossible Cloud

  1. Log in to the web interface of Impossible Cloud. You must have an account with a subscription to proceed. Once logged in, you can create buckets with advanced features like versioning and object lock.
  2. Click the Add Bucket button in the top right corner.

  3. Define the bucket properties. Enter the bucket name and select a region from the available options. Choosing the correct region helps ensure compliance. The region cannot be changed after the bucket is created.
  4. Enable versioning and object lock to better protect the data you store in the bucket and ensure compliance. These features can keep your files safe and accessible whenever you need them. They also allow you to use the immutability feature in NAKIVO Backup & Replication. Enabling object lock and retention rules prevents data modification or deletion for a specified timeframe that you can set in retention settings.

Enabling versioning and object lock in the new bucket properties

Note: In compliance mode, the user cannot overwrite or delete a protected object version. When an object is locked, its retention period can’t be shortened and the retention mode cannot be changed. This ensures that the object version cannot be overwritten or deleted for the duration of the retention period.

  5. Once the bucket has been created, you can find your endpoint. For example, the endpoint for eu-central-2 is https://eu-central-2.storage.impossibleapi.net.
  6. Create the access key. Click Keys in the left pane and hit the Add Key button. The key enables seamless Impossible Cloud integration with data management and backup solutions, like NAKIVO Backup & Replication.
  7. Generate your key and save it. Click Download CSV and save the file with the access and secret keys. Keep in mind that keys are created once. If you lose them, you have to generate new keys.

Step 2 – Add Bucket as an Inventory Item in NAKIVO

  1. Install NAKIVO Backup & Replication. You can download the Free Trial from the NAKIVO website.
  2. Open the web interface of NAKIVO Backup & Replication and log in using the administrator account.
  3. Add a new storage inventory item. Go to Settings and click the Plus (+) button.
