Automatic Mode Selection
The solution automatically selects either Direct SAN or HotAdd mode depending on the availability of a SAN. No additional configuration is required from the user, and both methods work without sending data through the LAN or VM hosts.
Direct SAN access
If you use a Storage Area Network (SAN), NAKIVO Backup & Replication reads the VM data directly from SAN storage devices over ISCSI or Fibre Channel. In the direct SAN mode, the data doesn’t pass over LAN or through VM hosts. This way, you can achieve higher data transfer rates without putting an extra load on the production network.
HotAdd
If no SAN is used, NAKIVO mounts a VM snapshot as a virtual disk and reads data from the VM datastore. The data moves through the storage I/O stack without touching the LAN or VM host, achieving almost the same performance as direct SAN mode.
Optimized Data Flow
LAN-Free transfer reduces network traffic and offloads resource usage from VM hosts. This enables faster backup and replication across all supported platforms, even in large or busy environments.
